On the last day of the Festival of Rhona, Tarnia will be judged by the river spirit to find out if she has what it takes to rule her people – not that she could care less about the opinions of some made-up deity.
With a severe facial disfigurement, a missing mother, and a father who is losing his mind to illness, Tarnia has often found that stubbornness and sarcasm are the easiest ways of covering up her insecurities. But even they can’t help when her reckless actions alienate her from the very people she has always relied on for protection.
Finding herself powerless and fleeing for her life, it seems only one thing can help her win back the love and respect of her people – Gold – and she will travel to the far end of the valley to get it.
But not everything that sparkles in the sunlight is gold…
Sometimes it’s far, far more precious than that.
Mere has been queen for almost as long as she has been alive. Desperate to live up to the reputation of her mother, she does what is required of her and her people are content – at least, that is what she has always been led to believe.
When a red-coated stranger turns out to be more than just a party guest, Mere learns a horrible truth – everything she has been told is a lie and her people are suffering. But how are you supposed to stand up to the people who control you when even the thought of asking for a glass of water fills you with dread?
There is only one person who can put things right, and Mere will have to cross land and sea to find them.
But it’s not just physical obstacles standing in the young queen’s way. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is ask for help.
When Betty and her friend Alfi discover an ancient map leading to a mythical sword, both imagine they’re destined to follow in the footsteps of Tarnia, the last real warrior queen of Witzland, and save their country. But it’s Betty’s timid sister Gemma who raises the legendary blade to the sky and events quickly get out of hand. She’s adopted by the military as a prophet and toured around the regions to build support for an attack on the enemy. Meanwhile, Betty can only watch as her sister turns from the good-hearted girl she knew into a merciless zealot. Worse, everyone involved has their own agenda and as Gemma marches towards her destiny, it seems that, far from glory and liberation, only death and destruction awaits...
Fulfilling your destiny isn’t just about finding out who you are. Sometimes it’s about coming to terms with what you’re not.
Set three hundred years after the events of Rhona’s Gift and The Clutches of Vispa, Tarnia’s story has passed into legend – and there is nothing more dangerous than a half-remembered legend.
